2020-04-04: Adobe walls and Siberian Elm, Santa Fe

In Santa Fe, blue skies, budding trees, and adobe walls form attractive color combinations. In early spring the Siberian elms are the first trees to bud, thus getting an advantage over other competitors for water and seed dispersion. They were introduced in Santa Fe and many other parts of the United States to benefit from their rapid growth and tolerance to drought. They are now better known for their sensitivity to disease, and the millions of seeds they produce which feel gardens and streets to the dismay of gardeners and city maintenance workers. Classification of the Siberian elm as a noxious weed and invading pest came to late to contemplate eradication.
